The First Lady, Dame Patience Jonathan, on Wednesday in Port Harcourt empowered 1,380 women through her NGO, the Women for Change and Development Initiative (W4CDI).
Jonathan, who also commissioned the South-South zonal office of W4CDI in Rivers, said the empowerment tools would bring relief to benefiting families.
Each of the 23 local government areas in the state got 60 tools, consisting of 30 sewing machines, 20 tomato/pepper milling machines and 10 cassava milling machines.
The president’s wife urged the women to use proceeds from the tools to augment their family income. She said: “’We are here to empower women so that they can support our men.“ ’If the need arises to pay school fees or even buy seasoning, the women will be up to the task.”
Jonathan charged the women to remain united “because we are one”. “The W4CDI cuts across parties. We are one, here we speak with one voice. Let us stay united.
“If we stay united, we can move forward and we’ll achieve the 35 per cent we’ve been clamouring for.” She further enjoined them to remain peaceful because the present administration was in favour of women holding key positions. The Executive Secretary of the organisation, Linda Somiari-Stewart, lauded the first lady’s initiative, saying “Nigerian women are better for the efforts.
“She has gone beyond mere sloganeering to hands-on approach in meeting women’s needs.” In their separate remarks, the representatives of the some women communities in Port Harcourt, Mrs Also Obi and Madam Silverline Tamuno, expressed gratitude to Jonathan for impacting on their lives.
